“That would be nice.” She smiled him a cheerful goodbye.

They had tea out, at a dear little teashop, all chintz and flowered china, a fitting background for the paper-thin sandwiches and cakes oozing cream.

“I ought not to,” said Katrina, having a second one.

Raf eyed her across the little table.

“Why not? You don’t have to starve yourself on my account. I like curves.”

She went a delicate pink.

“Yes, well…” she began uncertainly.

“It’s bad enough being so big, I don’t want to get fat.”

“You won’t. Besides, we shall walk miles during the next few days, you’ll need all your strength.”

They wandered down Princes Street, pausing to look at everything which caught their eye, and when Katrina remarked on a handbag, displayed in unpriced state on a length of velvet, Raf walked her into the shop and bought it for her, and when she thanked him and protested at his extravagance he remarked easily: “Ah, but it’s an investment—it will last you a lifetime.”

She brightened.

“So it will—I’ll take great care of it, Raf They left Edinburgh early the next morning, taking the motorway to Stirling and then on

to Callender and so to Locheamhead, where they stopped for lunch.

They were in the Highlands now, and Katrina was loving every moment of it.

It didn’t look in the least like a hotel; it had battlements and turrets and gabled windows and inside it was warmly welcoming with tea in the library, where a log fire burned cheerfully and the proprietor joined them briefly, chatting about Raf’s last visit, recommending some walks they might like to take and then handing them over to a pleasant girl who took them to their rooms and offered to unpack for them—an offer Katrina declined, happily putting her things away and then going through to Raf’s room to see if she could do the same for him.

They dined off fresh salmon, a magnificent salad and apricot brulee, and joined the other guests for coffee in the library, and presently tired with her exciting day, Katrina said goodnight and went upstairs.

Raf had gone to the

door with her and stood a moment holding it open.

“We might try one of those walks tomorrow,” he suggested.

“I’m told the weather is going to be good for a few days at least.”

“Lovely. It’s beautiful here, Raf—what a marvelous holiday!”

His mouth twitched faintly as he wished her goodnight.

They had five days there, and every one better than the last, thought Katrina on their last evening. They had walked, picnicked and fished, sat in the sun and read and talked unendingly. At last she felt that she was beginning to know Raf, although there was a great deal more she still had to discover. That they were
